Steve Rifkind Hints At Joell Ortiz Signing To SRC Records

UPDATE: Ortiz’s manager says the rapper is still a free agent, and the conversation with SRC was casual.

After stints with Rawkus Records, Aftermath/Interscope Records and E1 Entertainment (f/k/a Koch Records), Brooklyn, New York emcee Joell Ortiz may be headed to SRC Records. The Slaughterhouse member has yet to speak on the matter, but SRC’s CEO Steve Rifkind tweeted that a deal was in progress.

Once home to Pharoahe Monch and David Banner, SRC is presently home to Asher Roth and Akon. Besides Slaughterhouse’s self-titled 2009 album, Ortiz released The Brick: Bodega Chronicles in 2007. His upcoming E1 album Free Agent is said to feature production from DJ Premier, Alchemist and others. (August 30)

UPDATE: After Rifkind’s tweet became news, XXLMag.com spoke to Joell Ortiz’s long-time manager Mike Heron, who clarified the reports. Heron explained that the relationship with Rifkind is a friendship, and the parties were more having a casual discussion. “It’s never been anything on paper or anything like that; it’s very, very informal with Steve. We’re having conversations with people,” was among the things Heron said.
